Food Services Packaging Sustainability Guidelines and Case Studies

For the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation
Published in October 2019

Patrick Crittenden was contracted by the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) to develop a practical guide that food service organisations can use to improve packaging sustainability from purchase through reuse, recycling and disposal.

The project involved:

  • desktop research to identify existing resources

  • structural design to ensure the handbook is accessible

  • development of a brief for the project's graphic designers

  • design and facilitation of a half-day workshop with over 50 food industry stakeholders to obtain their perspectives and suggestions

  • interviews with case study organisations including Qantas, The GPT Group, Wollongong and Hobart City Councils

  • final drafting of the guidelines and associated case studies.

The guidelines were launched at the Australian Waste and Recycling Expo at the Sydney International Convention Centre in October 2019 and reviewed in Packaging News.
