Leadership in a time of Climate Change:

Learning from Corporate Leaders

Keynote Presentation

Description

We live in a time of climate change. For corporate real estate owners this means increasing pressure from regulators, customers and investors to manage assets in ways that reduce energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Energy efficiency can reduce operating costs, attract and retain tenants, help to reposition and futureproof buildings, reduce exposure to legislative obligations and enhance corporate reputation. However, building owners in NYC and around the world have not yet obtained the full business benefits from energy efficiency improvement. So what do firms within the real estate community need to do to realise these benefits?

To answer that question, Patrick Crittenden sought out the leading real estate firms and practitioners in the Australian real estate community. These firms have consistently been rated as global leaders in relation to energy efficiency and environmental improvement in the real estate sector [1]. He conducted interviews, reviewed public reports and analysed the public presentations of leading practitioners. Patrick identified that the fundamental point of difference between successful firms and practitioners was that they were approaching energy efficiency improvement through a change leadership paradigm. This contrasts with the traditional appraoch in which energy efficiency has been primarily viewed as a technical initiative focused on incremental management rather than organisational transformation.

In this keynote presentation Patrick will establish the theme for this conferency by:

  • What does it mean to be living in a time of climate change?

  • How does it affect us personnally?

  • How does it affect our workplaces?

  • What are corporate leaders doing?

  • What is in it for them?

  •

  • Introducing the concept of change leadership and explaining its relevance for corporate leaders

  • Describing the similarities in the business and policy context between Australia and New York City that has contributed towards energy efficiency improvement

  • Presenting the key change leadership strategies that practitioners have applied to accerate energy efficiency improvement and to manage the uncertainties associated with living in a time of climate change
