Patrick Crittenden was contracted by the Australian Government to develop a publication for the Leading Practice Sustainable Development for the Mining Industry program. The program promotes sustainable development and industry self-regulation through the proactive adoption of leading practice principles.

The handbook was developed with guidance from an industry steering committee with key input provided Dr. Carl Grant at Anglo American and Albert Dessi at the Department of Environment and Energy.

Part 1 of the handbook is focused on developing and communicating the business case for energy management. Part 2 is about integrating energy management into management systems. Part 3 is focused on technology and operating practices.

The handbook is aligned with and supports relevant Australian and international standards, including ISO 50001 Energy management systems—requirements with guidance for use and the AS/NZS 3598:2014 series for conducting energy audits.

The handbook is available in English and Indonesian and was launched by the Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop.
